Bonsai kokedama Mirto Syzygium

Bonsai - the birth of this technique and its concept

Bonsai is an ancient Japanese practice that dates back over a thousand years. The word "bonsai", differently from kokedama (whose history and meaning you can find here ), in Japanese means "potted plant".

The art of bonsai consists of growing miniature trees and shrubs inside small pots, controlling their growth and shaping by pruning the roots and leaves.

Bonsai has Chinese origins and was brought to Japan by Buddhist monks around 1000 AD. Initially, bonsai were grown exclusively by Japanese nobles and aristocrats, as a form of artistic expression and meditation. Over time, bonsai has become popular around the world as a gardening practice and as an art form.

Bonsai cultivation requires a lot of patience, attention and care. The shape of the tree can be shaped in many different ways, but the end goal is always to create a miniature tree that looks natural and harmonious.

Bonsai kokedama

Bonsai has become a highly regarded art form, and the most beautiful bonsai can cost thousands of dollars.

This technique subsequently expanded into a more drastic form, namely that of "mame bonsai", mame in Japanese "means bean".
They are very small bonsai, no bigger than the palm of your hand (but we'll talk about this another time).

Bonsai is a practice that requires a lot of dedication and passion, but also a great knowledge of plants and their growth. Here are some important points to take into consideration when growing a bonsai:

  • Choice of plant : Not all plants are suitable for growing as bonsai. It's important to choose a plant that has flexible branches and small leaves, so you can shape it easily. Additionally, it is essential to consider the climate and environmental conditions in which the plant will grow.
  • Pruning : Pruning is one of the main tools for shaping the shape of the bonsai. It is important to prune the leaves and branches regularly to maintain the desired shape and promote balanced growth of the plant.
  • Fertilization : the bonsai needs balanced fertilization to grow healthy and strong. It is necessary to choose a fertilizer suitable for the needs of the plant and dose it carefully.
  • Watering : Watering is essential for bonsai growth. However, it is important not to overwater, to avoid root rot. It is advisable to water the plant only when the soil is dry to the touch.

Growing a bonsai can be a very rewarding experience, but it requires time and dedication. However, the end result will be a miniature tree that looks natural and harmonious, capable of bringing serenity and beauty to your home or garden.
